Trailshead Lodge

If you're in search of a peaceful escape that still keeps you within arm's reach of the Black Hills' top attractions, Trailshead Lodge is your ideal haven. Nestled in the picturesque Northern Black Hills only 13 miles to Spearfish Canyon National Scenic Byway and 20 miles to the mountain town of Lead, this cozy lodge and cabins offer a serene retreat where you can listen to the haunting calls of elk in the crisp autumn air or watch wildlife in the spring and summer. It's a place that strikes a perfect balance, giving you the tranquility you crave while keeping you close enough to the region's most captivating sights.

But Trailshead Lodge is more than just a retreat; it's a gateway to a winter and summer wonderland. As the central hub of the snowmobile trail system, it's the go-to destination for snowmobile enthusiasts. South Dakota's Black Hills snowmobile trail system consistently ranks as the number one or two system in the nation, as recognized by SnoWest. What sets it apart is that the trails here are groomed nightly by dedicated state employees, ensuring optimal riding conditions. With an impressive 350 miles of groomed trails and over 300 more miles of logging roads and forest service roads open for your snowmobiling adventures, the possibilities are nearly endless. Some of these trails are left in their natural state, providing a rugged and raw riding experience for the more adventurous snowmobilers.

One of the unique features of the snowmobile trail system is its design, which radiates out from Trailshead Lodge. The trails are meticulously marked with orange reflector markers, spaced approximately 300 feet apart. This design makes navigation a breeze. If you encounter the markers on the right side of the trail, you're heading away from Trailshead Lodge. On the other hand, if you spot the markers on the left side, you're on your way back to the lodge. It's simple to remember: "Right means away, left leads to the Lodge - but only to Trailshead Lodge." The great part is that all trails ultimately circle back to Trailshead Lodge, so you can explore new paths without retracing your steps.

When you stay here you have the flexibility to bring your snowmobile or rent a single or double snowmobile from us. The convenience doesn't end there. Trailshead Lodge boasts a restaurant and bar on-site, ensuring you can refuel with a hearty meal or a warm drink. You’ll see they also provide gas, parts, rental gear, and ample parking, making it an easy pit stop for those traveling with large rigs.

The fun is year-round at Trailshead Lodge - welcoming travelers to enjoy a visit no matter what the season. For warmer weather outdoor enthusiasts, the lodge is also a starting point for the extensive ATV/UTV trail system. You'll find a plethora of trails to explore in the lush, natural beauty of the Northern Black Hills. Again, all trails begin and end here – no need to trailer your ATV or UTV to a trailhead.

Hunting enthusiasts will discover that Trailshead Lodge is a convenient place to stay when pursuing their passion in South Dakota or Wyoming. Fall season in the area is a true spectacle, with vibrant foliage painting the landscape in a breathtaking display of colors. The laid-back atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for a memorable stay – warm or cold weather!

Stay in one of the year-round cabin rentals including seven contemporary cabins, as well as a studio unit above the lodge. So, whether you're drawn to Trailshead Lodge for the thrill of snowmobiling, the allure of ATV/UTV adventures, or the charm of a Black Hills retreat, this year-round oasis has something for everyone. It's a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the world and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Northern Black Hills and yet indulge in the adventures of off-roading, snowmobiling, hiking, or hunting – All trails lead here!
