President Theodore Roosevelt

The Roosevelt Inn is named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, who is among the presidents honored at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

President Roosevelt served from September 14, 1901, to March 4, 1909. Teddy’s environmental conservation concerns arose before he was president, especially in the mid-1880s when he spent time bison hunting and ranching in the Dakotas. In his journal during this time, he wrote about his concern for the disappearing natural resources that Americans relied upon. A little more than 10 years later, in his presidency, Roosevelt used his position to establish the United States Forest Service (USFS) and over 200 national forests, parks, reserves, and monuments. Without President Roosevelt’s conservation actions, some of our country’s beautiful landscapes like the Black Hills may not exist today.

The Roosevelt Inn borrows from the late-Victorian architectural style common during the Roosevelt presidency. Our small, family owned and operated Black Hills hotel near Mount Rushmore has been serving visitors since 1991.
